Dance Pole Finishes: Chrome, Brass, Steel & More

Quick answer

Chrome is the all-round standard, brass grips best of the metals, and silicone and powder coat grip most of all. If you have a nickel allergy, avoid standard chrome and titanium gold; brass, powder coat, silicone or Lupit’s chrome (sold as nickel-free) are the usual alternatives. Stainless steel is often recommended for allergies but does contain some nickel, so check with your doctor if your allergy is severe.

Pole finishes compared

Finish Grip Nickel Notes
Chrome Standard Contains nickel (Lupit sells a nickel-free chrome) Most common; smooth spin; can feel slippery when humid
Stainless steel Slightly more than chrome Some nickel in the alloy X-Pole recommends it for many allergy sufferers
Brass Highest of the metals; rises as it warms X-Pole calls it good for nickel allergies Tarnishes over time, reducing grip; needs polishing
Titanium gold Similar to chrome Coating over chrome Gold colour can wear off with use
Powder coat Very high Coated Can feel slippery with heavy sweat; no chemical cleaners
Silicone Highest Coated Needs little skin contact; 45mm only on X-Pole; can cause friction burns

How to choose a finish

  • Training for a studio or competition: chrome, stainless or brass, to match what you use elsewhere. IPSF specifies brass; POSA specifies chrome or nickel-free stainless.
  • Sweaty hands or a hot room: brass, powder coat or silicone, plus a grip aid. See pole grip aids.
  • Cold room or dry skin: brass, which grips better as it warms.
  • Nickel allergy: brass, powder coat, silicone or nickel-free chrome.
  • Dancing in long sleeves or trousers: silicone.

Caring for each finish

Wipe the pole before and after every session with a microfibre cloth. Use a pole cleaner or isopropyl alcohol on metal finishes, and polish brass occasionally to remove tarnish. X-Pole’s manual says not to use chemical cleaners on powder coat, so use a damp cloth. Check your manufacturer’s care guide for silicone.

Frequently asked questions

Which pole finish is best for a nickel allergy?

Avoid standard chrome and titanium gold. Brass, powder coat, silicone and Lupit’s nickel-free chrome are common choices. Stainless steel contains some nickel, so check with a doctor if your allergy is severe.

Which pole finish is the grippiest?

Silicone and powder coat grip the most, then brass, then stainless steel, with chrome and titanium gold the least grippy.

What pole finish is best in a humid room?

Brass, powder coat or silicone, often with a grip aid. Chrome can feel slippery when hands sweat, and a fan or dehumidifier helps any finish.

Does titanium gold wear off?

The gold colour can fade with use, revealing the chrome underneath. Retailers say grip stays about the same.

How do I clean a dance pole?

Wipe it before and after each session with a microfibre cloth and pole cleaner or isopropyl alcohol on metal finishes. Avoid chemical cleaners on powder coat.
